New Great Lesson Sites

Welcome
My name is Barbara Dubinsky. I have been involved in the Montessori community for 18 years through my own children, as a volunteer, an assistant, a teacher and an administrator. Last year, I joined the movement of Montessori into the public schools - a most exciting expansion. I now teach a first through third Lower Elementary class at Park Road Montessori School, a magnet school in Charlotte, N. C. It is both challenging and rewarding at the same time. I would like to see a sharing of ideas on the internet. Perhaps we can help each other with problems or just help to spread good ideas.

I've included one of my class' favorites. This idea has been passed on from person to person. Everyone I know who does this is convinced how very special it is.

Bobby

(before)

(after)

Bobby (of course, the children named him) is a white, toy gorilla that I brought to the class. Every day, he goes home with a different friend that I select at random. The only requirement is that the child have his or her bookbag if the child rides the school bus.

The child writes about what Bobby does while visiting. When Bobby returns we read what he has been up to. The children in my class have given Bobby little treasures when he visits them. I did not suggest this; it came from their love of Bobby. The children now select which treasures they would like to go home with them while Bobby visits. I have included three sample writings that I hope will show the sharing that Bobby ellicits.

Steven (age 6):
"Boby wet home with me. me and my mom tossed boby back and forth. I took boby in the den to sit in dade lap to wash the news. my sister talk to boby and let him listen to music. I am hapy to see boby. the end"
Jeff (age 7):
Bobby look at TV. He look at the Dog Show. He played with toys in my room. He sat down on the table We look at the bird. Bobby look at me the hole time He played a game. He played with the blocks.
Cameron (age 6):
